Privacy Policy

The short version

carry.less is a thought-capture app made by Unfussy Labs. This policy explains what the app does with your data and the choices you have. It uses plain language on purpose.

Your thoughts stay on your device. carry.less has no accounts: there is nothing to sign in to and nothing of yours on our servers. One thing leaves the device, the text of a dump when AI sorting runs, and this policy explains it. Your payment is between you and Apple, and nothing about it reaches us.

What carry.less keeps on your device

When you write a thought, carry.less saves it in a small database on your phone (SQLite). This includes the text you write, how it is sorted into shelves, and your app settings.

This data stays on your device. The only time any of it leaves is when AI sorting runs, which is described below.

AI sorting

carry.less requires a plan after a 3-day free trial. While a plan is active, AI sorting is included: up to 20 dumps a day on Base, or up to 200 a day on Max. When you submit a dump, its text is sent to our server, which passes it to an AI provider to suggest how to sort your thoughts. The suggestions come back to your device. The request also carries your device's local time and time zone, so that a thought like "tomorrow" or "Friday" can be worked out as a real date.

Sorting happens on your phone whenever AI sorting isn't used, including once you reach your plan's daily limit. It resets the next day.

We do not keep the text of your thoughts after the request is done.

Microphone and speech

When you tap the microphone, carry.less uses your device's own speech recognition to turn what you say into text. On iPhone this is Apple's dictation service, and your audio may be handled by Apple according to your own iOS settings.

carry.less never receives, stores, or sends your audio. Only the resulting text appears in the thought field, on your device.

Backups

carry.less keeps an automatic daily backup of your thoughts and settings. It is a file on your own device, written into the app's Documents folder in a subfolder called Backups. You can open it in the Files app under On My iPhone, and the app keeps the seven most recent days.

Because it sits in the app's Documents folder, this file is included in whatever backup your phone already makes of itself, such as an iCloud or computer backup. That is between you, your phone, and Apple. The file is never sent to us, and we cannot read it.

You can turn automatic backups off in More. Saving a backup file yourself and restoring from one are unchanged: both stay on the device, and nothing is uploaded.

Sensitive content and safety

carry.less is a personal notes tool. It is not a medical or mental-health service, and it does not give advice, diagnosis, or treatment.

The app checks your text on the device for signs of distress or urgency. If a thought reads like an emergency, the app shows a short, calm note with general guidance. This check runs only on your phone. Nothing about it is sent to us or to anyone else.

Where your data is stored

Your thoughts are stored on your phone and nowhere else, including the automatic backup files described above. We keep no copy of them.

When AI sorting is on, the text of that one dump passes through our server, hosted with Supabase in the European Union on Amazon Web Services in Ireland (region eu-west-1). It is processed and discarded, never stored there. That request carries your device's local time and time zone alongside the text, so relative times can be resolved, and nothing else about your phone.

Payments and plans

Apple takes the payment through your Apple ID. We never see your card.

The app checks your subscription on this phone, using Apple's own signed record of your purchase. We run no payment servers, and no purchase data is sent to us or to anyone else. Nothing about your purchases leaves your phone.

Manage or cancel the plan in your App Store subscription settings, and any refund is handled there too, under Apple's own refund policy.

What we do not do

carry.less is deliberately quiet about you. In particular:

• We do not show ads.
• We do not use analytics, and no advertising or tracking service is in the app.
• We do not sell your data or share it for marketing.
• We do not use your thoughts to train AI models.
• We do not ask you for a name, an email address, or an account.

Your rights and choices

carry.less serves people in the UK and Europe, so you have rights under the UK GDPR and the EU GDPR. Because we hold no copy of your thoughts, most of those rights you exercise directly on the device.

You can delete individual thoughts at any time, and "Clear all local data" in More removes everything the app holds. Backup files already written stay on the device until you delete them in the Files app, or delete the app itself. The app can export all of your data as a file that you can save or share.

We rely on your consent for AI sorting, and you can withdraw it at any time by turning the feature off in More. Your purchase is handled by Apple to provide the plan you bought, and we hold no record of it. If you live in the UK or the EU, you can also complain to your local data protection authority.

Children

carry.less is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has given us personal data, please contact us and we will remove it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app changes. If we make an important change, we will update the date at the top and, where we can, let you know in the app.
